Housing stats

It’s the 30th June – so this must be a good day to look at some of our housing stats for the financial year:

Carrical had 22 empty room nights for the year; Hamer had just 2 and Romana, from when it was first filled on 3rd June, had 0.

Carrical welcomed in 7 brand new resos during the year; Hamer 3 and Romana 24.

There were more exits by death than evictions this year – one death each at Carrical and Hamer and one eviction, drug use, at Carrical.

4 residents transferred facilities during the year.

2 former residents returned ‘home’ having realized the grass was much less green on the other side.

It took us from 8th May until 3rd June to fill Romana with the initial 24 resos.

I think these are a set of numbers we should be pretty proud of.

26th June update

Some nice donations have come in of late. $2500 from one foundation today and $1000 from another yesterday. The Philanthropy Club of Melbourne High raised over $1300 from their recently held Talent Quest. Hawthorn Community Chest recently raised inxs of $5000 for the Narrative book at their Cocktail party. Team Servants ’14 donations are starting to trickle in – with 2 days this week seeing inxs of $250 donated – these daily totals should/will rise considerably as we get close to the event date of Sunday 27th July.

We are now ready to sign the Option 2 amended HPF Lease which will take us from 30/6/14 thru 31/12/14. Amanda has been doing some considerable work ensuring we are Option 2 compliant. We are entering a brave new world of managing our own responsive, emergency and cyclical maintenance.

The first 2 vacancies have occurred at Romana – and have been immediately filled. We will almost certainly end the fin year with all 89 rooms tenanted and rents in a terrific position. There continues to be a huge number, nay, an overwhelming number of folks looking for Servants type accommodation.

I will be working on 2 grant applications, both due mid-July – one for further Narrative funding and one for a quite unique, one winner only grant, that I have begun talking with Tim and Connie about. Far too complex to enter into in detail within this missive – yet to whet your appetites I have given it the working title of The Buckminster Fuller Theory.

Narrative continues to progress nicely. I have recently brought on-board a 4th school, MLC, as the demand to have stories told is significant within our resident population.

All things Team Servants ’14 are ramping up nicely. Bar Ristretto (the café preferred by all at Servants!) has become Servants Central in the past couple of weeks as advertising for the Team (not to mention the free coffees they provide for our resos) reaches new heights. As a result of this a potentially very beneficial relationship with Amcor has developed. Watch this space …….

All things financial are in shape for the end of the fin year. This year’s audit will be towards the end of July. Matrix are helping us out in a few areas and this newly reinstated relationship appears to be progressing well.

A date for you diaries here: Servants will be hosting Carols @ Carrical on the evening of Monday 22nd December. The venue, not surprisingly, will be Carrical. This event will be staged to raise funds and profile for our friends from Hawthorn Community Chest.

I have spent more time talking in schools these past few weeks than ever before – I am forging terrific relationships with both Strathcona campuses, developing nicely at Melbourne High, continuing pleasingly at Trinity, Xavier and Carey and have just started to infiltrate the masses at MLC.

I cannot remember a couple of weeks when I have give away soooooooooooo many copies of Anthology – literally hundreds of copies. Anthology continues to be represent Servants in a powerful way.

Last night Servants hosted this year’s Leadership Victoria Williamson year at Carrical and then Hawthorn West Baptist Church. we have enjoyed many wonderful evenings with LV – but last night’s gathering was stunning. Just stunning. We have several other LV evenings established for the remainder of the year.

I have just started talking with Mike Cutter in regards to the creation of my first ebook – a leadership number entitled Ripple. I look forward to sharing this with you over the next few weeks.

Development with Boroondara Cares/Servants/Boroondara Council re a housing development for Servants remain very positive – of course, at this stage, there is very little that Warren and I can say about this as we are currently bound by an NDA. I am not quite sure at this stage as to when the NDA will be lifted.

The folks of the Carey Grammar community recently provided the resos with a HUGE amount of clothing. Other material gifts continue to be received – bicycles, ridiculously expensive TVs, food ……. the list goes on!

Last Sunday I preached at Kew Baptist Church – talking re homelessness and the work of Servants. It was very well received.

All relationships with major stakeholders appear to be strong at the present time.

I am developing a positive way forward with LV for 2015 for the Schools Leadership Project. There is no lack of interest from local high schools.

On a personal level I am pleased to report that Isabel will be discharged from hospital tomorrow (Friday) morning. This adds up to a 5 week hospitalization for her. She is doing well and the time is now right for her to continue to heal at home. I am greatly appreciative of all the support I have received from both the Servants and Hawthorn West Baptist families.

Overview

Romana is occupied by 23 residents. It becomes full Tuesday 3rd June when the final reso moves in. Hamer and Carrical remain full. This means all 89 of our rooms will be full and the trick now is to find the next few resos to move in when vacancies occur. Fin year to date empty room night figures are 2 for Hamer and 22 for Carrical. Romana stats will only be recorded once the house is full for the first time. To date nobody has left Romana.

Some donations came in last week – nothing enormous but they added up to several hundred dollars. I am speaking this Friday at Melbourne High School where they are hosting a fundraising talent contest for Servants. Melbourne Girls College and MacRob girls are also involved – so a great opportunity to spread the word about Servants.

Other speaking opps and events for Servants continue to roll in.

This morning I picked up a donation of 2 new filing cabinets and 2 as new printers.

We have locked in the audit date for late July. Talks with Matrix of late have been productive.

Amanda and I are currently working on issues pertaining to us transferring onto the Option 2 (did it yourself maintenance) HPF lease ahead of signing the General Lease later this year for Carrical. To date all progress has been positive.

On a personal level Isabel remains in hospital and is slowly but surely starting to mend.

Matt personal

Most of you will know by this stage that Isabel is very unwell. Friday and Saturday were very traumatic days. Isabel is currently being nursed in St Vincent’s psych. She is, sadly, an involuntary patient. The good news is that she is now safe and has the expert care around her that she very much needs at this moment in time. My hope is that within the next few days she will show signs of being on the road to recovery and will be able to be transferred into the private system.

In terms of my Servants workload I am imaging it will be very much business as usual – perhaps with a slightly reduced number of hours for the next few days.

All in the Wonderful World of Servants appears to be in a good place right now; Romana is filing beautifully; the other 2 houses are full 100% of the time; donations have just started coming in for those participating in Team Servants 14; speaking opportunities at schools and other places continue to come in; work on Narrative becomes still more exciting; I am starting to ‘own’ the finances more than I ever done have previously; we are becoming more and more known within the community and so on and so on …………………

The biggest help you can all be to my family at this time is to hold us all in your prayers. Thank you.

Meeting with Dept

I met with the Dept this arvo for discussions in regards to progressing Servants towards the General Lease and to ascertain their thoughts in regards the possibility of signing another lease with Boroondara Council for Hamer. There was nothing but good news! With regards to both issues there is nothing signed, sealed or delivered right now -but we should feel very confident going forwards with both projects.

Carrical and Hamer

In all the excitement re opening Romana I can assure you that Carrical and Hamer have not been forgotten! We had the disappointment last week of seeing a very sound Hamer reso unexpectedly leaving us to return to Adelaide – every cloud has a sliver lining and on this occasion the created vacancy was filled by a young man who for some inexplicable reason had been living at Ivy Grange for many months and had been badly assaulted 24 hours before I met him. Hamer management is working well and, overall, the house seems pretty settled.

Carrical has not seen any reso movement since late February. The house is peaceful. One of the resos is currently in an aged -care psych ward (should be home within a week or two) and one of the resos is at home and seriously struggling with psych issues but being carefully monitored by the Clarendon Clinic. All in all it is a very peaceful environment with several long-term resos saying it is the best it has ever been.

Romana

Romana currently has 17 residents. The 18th moves in on Wednesday and the 19th on Thursday. The Halls tell me that the mix of resos is terrific and that the house has got off to a splendid start. I am in no hurry to fill all 24 positions – I would much rather take plenty of time and be as sure as possible that our initial intake is as good as it can possibly be. We are having our first House Meeting with resos this Thursday evening. There are some wonderful stories coming out of Romana already. The relationship with the Slovenians is terrific. We have made our first monthly payment to them. A member of Camberwell Rotary brought around a wonderful box of ‘welcome’ flowers to the house today. Exciting times at Romana.

There are some pretty wonderful photos of the Romana Opening on both the Servants site and Facebook page. Can I please encourage to ‘like’ the Servants FB page if you have not as yet managed to do so?

Donations

I attended a lunch at Hawthorn Rotary today where Servants was presented with a cheque for $6500 to buy a new freezer for Carrical as well as raised, sustainable garden beds for Romana and industrial slow-cookers for all 3 commercial kitchens.

The mail included a $1000 cheque from a church group who recently attended a Community Dinner @ Carrical.

Someone gave Servants a $20 donation at the Romana launch on Saturday.

Opening

The Romana Opening was wonderful. When I think back to some of the great Servants occasions – Anthology launch, Not For Business Breakfast, theatre Opening Nights etc – the opening on Saturday absolutely stacks up alongside these events. The event showed us once again just how well networked we have become in recent years – there were so many people from so many varied networks in attendance. And for those reading this who were not there on the day – just how good a chap is FR Ciril?!?! Everyone was thrilled to see the house looking so terrific, and the only slightly negative feedback I received (which I quietly took as a compliment anyway!) was the chap from The Good Guys telling me not to be so angry!!!! Thank you President Warren and committee for your involvement on the day. It was a day I believe we should all feel rightfully proud of.

No Pulse!

I have not Pulsed for over a week now. Apologies.

Romana is currently two thirds full – 16 of 24. It is going well, really well. There are some wonderful stories for the telling coming out of Romana.

The official Opening for Romana occurs Saturday 17th with a 12.30pm kick-off.

Hamer had a rare vacancy this week – but was filled in a timely fashion to ensure our record of just 2 empty room nights for the fin year to date stays in tact …………….. not that we’re obsessive about this of course!

Bittersweet Thursday

Today was a day of extremes for me personally.

Having arisen at 4.30am and settled in to watch the Manchester City v Aston Villa game an email arrived from Harvard informing me that they were not offering me a place on the course I was expecting to attend in July. This has been very difficult news to digest. (pleased to report that City trounced Villa 4-0)

At 1.00pm this arvo we opened the doors of Romana to our first 3 new resos! This was such a good moment – one which I trust all involved with Servants will feel suitably proud of. We welcomed Ben, Natalie and Jaimie into the house. By next Wednesday we will be 2/3 full. Progress Leader took some pics of me, Fr Ciril, Rotarians and Ben later in the afternoon at Romana.

Ideas

I had a very interesting morning/early arvo today at Swinburne Uni’s Festival of Ideas. It was cold and rainy and the stage was outside! I talked to perhaps only 20 people – but this included some of the top brass from Swinburne who were very interested in talking about how they could partner with Servants in various capacities. They also took 100 copies of Anthology to distribute to various students/connections. I guess one of the things about a morning like this is that you just do not know what might come from it!

1000 + 42

One of the immediate consequences of last Saturday’s Community Dinner at Carrical was a donation of $1000 from one of the groups who visited.

Also, donations are off and running for Team Servants ’14 with 2 x $21 donations received this week.

Romana

We have just completed a huge week of progress at Romana. The change in the house in the past week has been nothing short of dramatic.

We are now moving quickly towards taking our first resident in on Thursday 8th May.

Cocktail Party

Last night Hawthorn Community Chest held their annual Cocktail Party – with Servants being the charity they chose to support on the night. It was an eye opening occasion in many ways. Mike & Alison Cutter, Amanda and Grace Donohoe and Esther Ling and Zoe Bradley joined me in representing Servants on the night. I spoke about Servants for a few minutes – and then much discussion ensued!

Ted Baillieu introduced me to the audience before I spoke and he said some wonderful things about Servants.

There have been some quite immediate outcomes of this very posh occasion – one of which has me being offered a guest speaker spot at this Sunday’s ‘Festival of Ideas’ @ Swinburne. My talk on Sunday is entitled ‘It’s All About The Key.’

I am sure that many good things will come out of Thursday night’s gathering.

Rarely, if ever, has a group of people representing Servants looked so glammed up!

Yajilarra

I had a meeting today with David Allan from the Yajilarra Trust. Yajilarra have supported Servants with various financial gifts over many years now.

A successful look around Carrical and Romana (including meeting a couple of Carrical resos) concluded with David explaining that Yajilarra remains very keen to continue partnering and assisting Servants into the future.

It was terrific to be able to finally understand what makes Yajilarra ‘tick.’

The thing they are most interested in supporting us with is seeing our unique model replicated in other places/with other groups.

There will doubtless be significant further dialogue into the future – but today’s meeting in itself was a success.

General update

A Community Dinner was held at Carrical on Saturday evening. 11 guests from 2 church groups were in attendance. It was as spectacular as usual; I expect several speaking opportunities to arise as a consequence of this Dinner.

We will be welcoming our first residents into Romana on Monday 5th May. Work at the house continues at pace. It is a veritable hive of activity!

One of Carrical’s favorite sons, David Northcombe, is currently in hospital – his first psychiatric admission in 14 years. Please pray for David’s healing. It has been touching  to see the number of staff/committee members and residents who have visited him.

The week ahead in Servants is looking quite enormous as we prepare to welcome residents to Romana a week tomorrow.

Cocktail Party

Hawthorn Community Chest are hosting their annual Cocktail Party this coming Thursday, 1st May, at Hawthorn Common in Burwood Rd, Hawthorn.

All funds raised from the night will be headed towards our Narrative book project.

I will be speaking on the evening. All are welcome to attend.

Tickets are $40 each and can be purchased here: http://www.trybooking.com/Event/EventSearch.aspx?keyword=president’s%20cocktail%20party&d=1&m=5&y=2014

General Lease

CHFV, our peak body, are still involved in protracted negotiations with an increasingly inept and frustrating Housing Dept of DHS (fact, not opinion) in regards to the General Lease (this involves only Carrical for us) CHFV are presently advising all member organizations NOT to sign the General Lease at the present time. On the surface this seems to work quite well for us as we continue to prepare all of our documentation to prove we are General Lease ready for Departmental approval.

Opening

Romana is starting to look just wonderful now. We are within the budget – just. Today I moved the opening day for residents back a few days from Wednesday 30th to Monday 5th May; this will give all involved the opportunity to ensure the house is looking spot on for the first resos in.

Everything in one place
