Team Servants ’14

TS14 has enjoyed a very positive week. The wisdom of having an all singing, all dancing database is now really coming into its’ own. The database has over 500 names on it now – and is increasing all the time. One of the lovely things re the database is how easily we can slice and dice names/events/histories to ensure that mail outs are absolutely tailored to specific groups of supporters. Much kudos to Nicole for her work on the database. All on the database have now been contacted re TS14 and the feedback from emails that were sent earlier this week has been terrific. Many people are committing to sign up and a handful of people have contacted me to say they will bring family, friends and colleagues on board to swell the team numbers. Amanda and I are meeting with senior school staff from MLC next week to talk re the possibility of their students and staff joining TS14. 3 months and a week out from the event and I am as happy as I could be right now with the progress being made.

Be warned! Connie is still to talk with committee and members of the association in regards to getting involved!!

Thanks Connie!

This morning at Hawthorn West Baptist Church Connie did a FANTASTIC job in advertising Team Servants ’14 to the assembled masses. Lots of encouragement was given to people to sign up, run, get fit and generally support this wonderful Team! If anyone happened to take a photo of Connie this morning in her running gear please Pulse it – to give the true idea of the lengths that Servants committee members go to in order to get their point across! Thank you Connie!

Postcard link

Below is the link to the Team Servants ’14 postcard – thanks as usual to Mike for making this look excellent. As some of us will be aware the sign up process is P A I N F U L!! Thanks too for Grace for the time invested in ensuring the clarity of the sign up info. Please feel free to advertise/distribute the postcard to interested parties. I know that Connie will be talking with committee/members/HWBC in the near future about plans for the Team.

Printer

Following the financial/Narrative book quantity decisions taken at last night’s extraordinary committee meeting I talked to Printer Chris from Southern Color this morning. He remains excited about the job/publication and is now working on figures etc to make things work. All good. In many ways little changes from my end – I still intend to hunt each and every dollar down for the project so that we are not out of pocket and the Yajilarra money can live to seed still more adventures for us.

First choice. Room 7.

The first room at Romana was chosen by a resident today. Natalie chose Room 7. We are on our way!

In other Romana news Brian and I had a site meeting today with Architect Steve and Builder Jeff. Everything is on track for Project One Builders to hand the house back to us on Wednesday 23rd April. We are currently on track for taking in the first residents on Wednesday 30th April.

I am working towards a tentative Opening Ceremony type of event on Friday 16th May – with a BBQ at lunchtime.

Romana resos

At some stage in the very near future I am going to have to stop interviewing people for Romana. The referrals from workers have been quite outstanding – with very few people that I would not even consider housing. From this week future residents are coming back to the house to start choosing rooms. And just FYI, there are currently 2 females who look set to move in from Opening Day.

Harvard Club of Victoria

I heard this morning that I have not been offered an interview for a scholarship from the Harvard Club of Victoria.

Recognizing that bringing Romana onboard has plenty of costs associated with it I have already commenced looking elsewhere for funds to help pay for the tuition at Harvard.

Fruit. Urban Seed.

In the last few days I sent our live-in House Manager PD at Hamer Court to Urban Seed, at their request, for them to send out to their networks and alumni to see if there would be any interest at all in any of their contacts taking over from the Donohoes at Hamer at the start of 2015. I am informed from US that the response has been very positive in terms of quantity of people who have contacted them displaying some interest. Good news!

New Social Housing Framework

The link above is to the recently released document from Minister Lovell on Social Housing. A bit of a lengthy read – but might be of some interest to some. There is talk of transferring 12,000 public housing units into the domain of community housing. The early indications are that the Housing Associations will be the groups targeted/expected to take on these properties.

General Lease

An increasing amount of time is currently being invested into looking at the General Lease for Carrical and what we need to do to be in a position to sign this off. There are several steps involved in this process – one of which will be ensuring that Committee is abreast of all relevant information in time for important decisions to be made at the May committee meeting. In a nutshell everything appears to be on track right now – we have had a comprehensive property condition report carried out at Carrical, have met with the Dept, have informed the Registrar of our General Lease intentions and have started to timeline all the other pieces of work that are required to ensure we are ready to sign the General Lease.

As a footnote to this it is reasonable to say that the Dept is currently in a greater state of chaos than usual. People are disappearing from their positions there on a daily basis. My confidence in the Dept is at an all time low.

Thursday

One day in the life of Servants at the present time seems like, well, I’m not quite sure what – but it is full, varied, challenging, creative, thought provoking and, mostly, fun!

Thursdays highlights included a phone conversation with long time DHS connection Maggie Laurie re the General Lease, interviewing and accepting a 44 year Christian guy into Romana, the first delivery (of many) of quality, free mulch to Romana, an amazing afternoon of Narrative interviews and liaising with a choir in relation to a couple of functions.

Servants is vibrant at this time!

Meeting with Housing Registrar

This arvo I met with Christine and Kai from the Housing Registrar to show the around Romana and for a general catch up in regards to all things Servants. It was a low-key, quite informal meeting; but all very positive. The meeting lasted 90 minutes so there was plenty of ground covered. And a sign of the continuing good relationship with the Registrar was perhaps best exemplified when Christine advised me that she will be putting a person from another housing group in touch with Servants in regards to a specific item  ‘as Servants knows how to do these things better than anyone.’ I tried to appear humble – but what she said was true!

Urban Seed

Amanda and I had a most fruitful meeting at Carrical this morning with top brass from Urban Seed. Servants and US alike have been looking forward to this meeting since our initial talks at the Surrender Conference a couple of weekends ago. The relationship is off to a terrific start; several ideas have been floated in regards to the possibility of the establishment of something of a pipeline of Housing Managers for Servants being generated from US. Our next step in this evolving relationship will see Amanda and me visiting US to see some of their work. This meeting today made the looooong weekend spent at Surrender completely worthwhile!

Free tickets to Comedy

Candlelight have offered Servants 4 pairs of complimentary tickets to Squeaky Clean Comedy this Saturday night in the City. If you would like a pair of tickets please let me know by email no later than this Wednesday night and I will arrange tickets for you.

Amanda

Amanda has just commenced her 5th year of living on-site at Carrical. Amanda informed me last week that she believes that her time at Carrical is drawing to a conclusion – as always has to be the case, eventually, when one runs Carrical. Amanda is currently house hunting and it appears logical to put a new manager/s into Carrical as Amanda moves out. This might happen in a relatively short timeframe. I am already in serious conversation with a couple in regards to their following Amanda into Carrical.

At this stage Amanda fully intends to stay on with Servants in her role of Operations Manager.

SAHAC conference

Friday arvo I attended and spoke at the inaugural City of Boroondara Social and Community Housing conference. Expecting it to be as toothless and dull as a quarterly SAHAC meeting (extraordinarily toothless and extraordinarily dull) it was, pleasingly, anything but!! There were 4 speakers – including our friend Stephen Nash. There were some intriguing conversations. Boroondara Police wanted the Servants opinion about the future of Ivy Grange – and the future of private rooming houses within the municipality was discussed at length. I made a couple of useful new connections but, perhaps of most significance, was the realization that we are seen as a very significant voice for the homeless/low income folks within Boroondara – this was quite a revelation!

Meeting @ Trinity

I had a terrific meeting at Trinity yesterday morning where this developing relationship went to the next level. I met with my main man there, social services coordinator Tom Delahunty, and the 2 Year 11 boys, Noah and Nick, who are working on the Narrative book. You may recall that Trinity held a fundraiser late last year in the form of a Trivia Night for Servants. The second edition of this event will be held in late October – and will apparently be a still bigger and better event. The school has also agreed to become fully involved and supportive of Team Servants ’14 – much in the style of the model adopted by Strathcona last year. I am encouraging small groups of Trinity boys to become involved in lunchtime bbqs at our houses and in Term 2 will commence focus groups with students for the proposed leadership program commencing 2015. There is something very positive at play in the Servants/Trinity relationship.
